EC food safety approval

European regulations dictate that all establishments handling food of animal origin must be approved by the national authority. Establishments include abattoirs / slaughterhouses, cutting plants, processors, other producers and are categorised according to the product handled.

Food produced by approved establishments must carry an EU identification mark (or similar EU health mark) indicating the approval number.

The first part of the approval number is a two-letter national code, indicating the country in which the food was produced (ie its last point of processing or packing), followed by a site-specific approval number (search approval numbers with Food Tracer) and ending with the ‘EC’ European Commission indicator.
