A note on spelling

Abattoir is the correct spelling, while slaughterhouse (occasionally “slaughter house”) is preferred by Americans. In the UK, most attempted spellings of abattoir (a word borrowed from French) are correct, but “abbatoir” is a frequent misspelling, with “abatoir” and “abbattoir” rather less common. (See Google’s Insights for Search comparison of the alternatives.)
