A note on spelling

Abattoir is the correct British spelling, while slaughterhouse (occasionally “slaughter house”) is preferred by Americans and the Food Standards Agency. In Britain, most attempted spellings of abattoir (a word borrowed from French) are correct, but “abbatoir” is a frequent misspelling, with “abatoir” and “abbattoir” rather less common.
